Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association and host of the British Pie Awards, said: “Bowring Butchers submitted a truly scrumptious pie.”

George Bowring, joint owner of Bowring Butchers, said: “We have won golds before but we never expected to win the big one. I think we won because it has perfect pastry and is perfectly cooked and perfectly glazed”

His father, Robert Bowring, is who retired last year, added: “We started making pies 35 years ago and meat and potato has always come first.”
