New look for Mansfield market launched

Posted onPosted on 12th Apr

Mansfield District Council’s £100,000 regeneration project of its town centre market — new and improved stalls, a new layout and enhanced food court — has been officially launched.

An array of entertainment marked its relaunch and more events are planned as the council aims to breathe new life into the market to encourage shoppers back to the town.

The highlight of the relaunch event was delivered by street entertainers from Covent Garden, including and the Levitating Wizard.

It was their first appearance in Mansfield Market Place and new acts are due to perform monthly for the rest of 2016.
The entertainment included a craft workshop by Mansfield Museum and performances by a gospel choir, steel pan band and the Maypole Goodtime Band.

Sarah Adamson’s School Of Dance also entertained in the new performance area at the front of the Old Town Hall.
There was a stilt-walking chef, a comedy walkabout act who helped to give out freebies and information leaflets about the market.

The market stalls, which have been moved from West Gate to the new centralised location on the Market Place, have been given bright new canopies and are now in place ready for business every Tuesday to Saturday.

The council’s director for economic growth, Mike Robinson, said: “We are thrilled with the amount of people who came out to show their support for the new market and hope the public will continue to make Mansfield Market a prime shopping destination.

“We would like to encourage people to shop local, support our independent traders and help us to revitalise our town centre.

“This is a great time to take a stall at the market, too — traders of new lines will get a year rent-free to help them build up their business.”

Free stall space is available via the council’s business incubation scheme for traders who can offer new product lines at the market.
