National award hope for health trust teams

Posted onPosted on 20th Mar

Two teams at Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust have been shortlisted in the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value Awards.

They will find out in May if they have been successful in the awards, which celebrate the best examples of outstanding efficiency and improvement in NHS organisations nationwide.

They particularly reward projects that demonstrate improved value for money and clear improvements for patients.

The trust, which runs King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton, and Mansfield Community Hospital, is celebrating the recognition for the radiology department and the pre-op team.

The radiology department (including members, pictured) has been shortlisted in the Improving the Value of Diagnostic Services section for its work in training and developing its own sonographers in response to a national challenge in recruiting to these roles. The move has been successful in reducing the amount the trust spends on agency staff and has improved patient experience.

The pre-op team in the running in the Surgical Services Initiative of the Year category for its work on reducing on-the-day surgical cancellations, which is saving the trust money and improving usage of operating theatres.
The project has also been shortlisted for a British Medical Journal award.

Richard Mitchell, chief executive of Sherwood Forest Hospitals, said: “We’re very proud of both of these great teams for being shortlisted for such prestigious awards — to be recognised nationally for the work we are doing is a real credit to everyone involved.

“We all know that resources are under pressure for NHS organisations, which means we need to do things differently to offer better value, whilst also improving patient care. That is not always easy to do, but it’s something that both of these teams have been very successful in achieving.”
