Mayor ready to pound the streets with 10k runners

Posted onPosted on 11th Sep

The Mayor of Mansfield, Andy Abrahams, will be among more than 1,000 runners taking part in the Mansfield 10k on Sunday.

The Mayor, pictured at the Great North Run a few years ago, has enjoyed running for many years but describes himself as being ‘well past his best’.

He will be helping runners warm up before the start of the 10k and will be handing out medals to the winners.

The Mayor said: “The main thing for me is keeping fit, taking part, enjoying the experience in my home town…and hopefully finishing!”

The Mayor is asking members of the public to sponsor him to raise money for his 500 Fund.

He is already donating 30% of his annual allowance to the fund and has awarded £3,800 to a total of eight local community groups in the first round of applications.

Donations to the fund will enable even more projects to be helped. You can donate via www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/andrew-abrahams-2

About 20 employees, of all abilities, from Mansfield District Council have also signed up to take part.

The Mayor said: “The council is really pleased to be the main sponsor of the Mansfield 10k again and to be hosting it in our town centre.

“We would love to attract more events like this that bring people from all over the region into our district and show them all that we have to offer here. We hope hundreds of people will line the streets to cheer on the runners and give them a very warm welcome to Mansfield.

“Running is not only a free and easy way to improve your physical and mental wellbeing but also a great way to get out and about in our district and see our fantastic selection of parks and open spaces.”
