Mansfield Town strengthen midfield with new signing

Mansfield Town have signed Charlton Athletic midfielder George Lapslie on loan until the end of the season.

Stags manager Graham Coughlan said: “George has Championship experience and he’s a bundle of energy, with quality on the ball.

“He will add competition for places in the middle of the park and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Lapslie said: “I run very hard and I’ll give everything I’ve got. Hopefully I can add some quality to the final third.

“The gaffer [Graham Coughlan] wants me to play in a higher midfield role, and he’s expecting assists and goals.”

The 23-year-old joined the Addicks in 2009 and quickly progressed through the youth ranks at the club.

In 2017, Lapslie scored on his professional debut for Charlton in an EFL Trophy tie against Crawley Town.

The midfielder has made over 50 appearances for his current club, most of which coming in the Championship and League One.

Lapslie found the net in one of his ten Championship appearances last term, in a 3-1 win over Luton Town in February 2020.

He also won Charlton’s Young Player of the Year award in the 2018/19 campaign.
