Mansfield Rotary launches litter-picking campaign

Posted onPosted on 16th Sep

Residents in Mansfield have been urged to get involved in a new initiative to clean up the town — the Just Bin It scheme.

Mansfield Rotary Club has spent around £300 on 100 litter-pick tools, which it is making available free to anyone who will pick up litter around their neighbourhood, roadsides, pavements or parks and schools.

Rotarian Stewart Rickersey said: “What we would like is for volunteers, they might be individuals or groups, young or old, who could register their interest in joining the Just Bin It scheme.

“Once registered, we will let them know where they can pick up their litter picker.

“We hope to be able stretch out our efforts across 100 local streets to try to achieve a fairly widespread effort in Mansfield. Volunteers can share their efforts with us by e-mail, text and social media.”

Kate Allsop, president of Mansfield Rotary Club, added: “We are appealing for residents in the Mansfield area to come forward and litter pick in the vicinity of their own homes or whilst they might be out exercising or walking their dog.

“And to encourage that process Mansfield Rotary Club will provide one litter picker to each person registering their address.

“One hundred litter pickers have been ordered initially. Let’s all make a positive difference to our town in these difficult times.”

The Rotarians have already made a start by getting busy with their new project.

“They have already achieved dozens of bags of rubbish picked up from around the area, with help from family and friends.”

To register, litter picking volunteers need to share their details with Mansfield Rotary Club via text, e-mail or social media. Once registered the club will let them know where they can pick up the litter picker.
