Litter-pickers aiming to make a difference

Posted onPosted on 20th Aug

A group at Portland College has pledged to undertake regular litter-picking in Mansfield as part of a successful Rotary Club-inspired campaign.

Just Bin It! has been running for a year and so far Mansfield Rotary Club has been supported by hundreds of volunteers.

Rotarians are providing litter-pick tools free to anyone who will pick up litter around their neighbourhood, roadsides, pavements, parks and schools.

Now a group from Portland Day Services at the college has got involved and recently completed litter-picking today in the High Oakham area of Mansfield.

The five people are all part of the Day Service Garden Group that already does great work on the Portland campus to keep the grounds tidy and litter-free.

However, the group was keen to take its hard work out into the local community and make a real difference there too.

After expressing an interest in getting involved with the Just Bin It! initiative, Mansfield Rotary Club provided the group with 10 litter-picker sticks and blue council waste bags to help them with their work.

The group caught a bus from the college and got off near High Oakham Primary School. They then walked down the busy Nottingham Road litter-picking before continuing their work on other nearby streets.

The college said: “Whilst they were out many local residents offered words of encouragement and thanked the group members for their efforts.

“The group filled two large waste bags with rubbish in just two hours, so they really did make such a difference.

“The group enjoyed themselves and plans to go out once a week into different parts of Mansfield to do this. There is no stopping them now!”

College staff members Jane Bilton and Sarah Moore coordinated the activity.

Anyone interested in joining the Just Bin It! campaign is asked to register on Mansfield Rotary’s website — https://mansfieldrotary.co.uk/mansfields-big-clean — or call 01623 706540 and leave a message.
