Hospice fundraisers to step out on canal walks

Posted onPosted on 6th Dec

Generous fundraisers Brian Hawkins and Michael Dickinson (pictured) are to continue their fundraising walks for the John Eastwood Hospice.

The Edwinstowe friends, who are both in their 70s and have already raised more than £355,000, plan to tackle four canal walks in 2020 — the Aire to Calder Navigation, the Huddersfield Broad and Narrow canals, and the Worcester Canal.

Brian said: “The generous and continued support we have been fortunate to receive from our many friends, family and supporters over the years drives us on.

“I realise how many good causes there are and how many hardworking people there are supporting them, raising funds in so many different ways.

“But if it is at all possible for you to consider once again supporting us, we would be most grateful.”

The duo started undertaking sponsored walks 15 years ago after the Sutton hospice cared for Brian’s wife, Glennys.

After her death, Brian and Michael started out raising money to “try to say thank you to the amazing staff at the hospice.”

Brian said they looked after his wife so well, with care and compassion, and also her family during such a difficult time.

Last Brian and Michael walked around 80 miles from Leeds to the Humber Bridge — taking in the Leeds to Hull canal pathway en-route — and raised £15,797.75.

Brian added: “Any expenses incurred are paid for by Michael and me and we take nothing out of the donations given.”
