Do you know how to correctly store these 10 common household items?

Posted onPosted on 11th Oct

When it comes to storing items in our homes, many of us have had very little education on the matter apart from the bare essentials and even then, the majority of us still get it wrong.

To make your life easier, Vlatka Lake, marketing manager at self storage provider, Space Station, has shared the top 10 everyday items that are most commonly stored in the wrong place and how you can store them correctly to get more from your products.

Eggs

When it comes to eggs, there is a huge debate on where they should be kept, with some saying in the fridge and others saying on the counter. The general consensus is to store eggs in the fridge, but not in the egg racks commonly found on the fridge door. Egg racks are susceptible to changes in temperature due to the fridge door opening and closing and can cause your eggs to go rotten more quickly.

Nuts

In most households, nuts are kept on the counter or in a bowl on the table, but to enhance the flavour and make them last longer, nuts should be kept in the fridge. Heat can accelerate oxidation, especially in items with a saturated fat content, and keeping them in a fridge will help your nuts retain their moisture.

Perfume

Many of us keep our prized perfume collection on display on our dressing tables. However, to prolong the scent of your favourite fragrance, sometimes it is best to store them in a refrigerator. Perfumes and colognes with high oil concentrates can break down over time when exposed to light and heat. Remember to always keep fragrances away from window sills and bathrooms and opt for a dry, cold storage cupboard if fridge space isn’t available.

Champagne

Although many of us like our Champagne chilled, keeping it in the fridge for prolonged periods of time can ruin the taste because the air is too dry and cold for the bubbles. Store your Champagne in a cool place and only refrigerate a day before you’re going to drink it to enhance its taste.

Avocados

Have you ever wondered why your avocados aren’t ripening? Storing avocados in the fridge delays the ripening process – which is a great if you’re looking to eat them in a few days’ time, but not when you’re making guacamole for dinner. Instead, store avocados at room temperature in a bowl on your kitchen worktop.

Foundation

Make up bags are often the most popular storage space for foundation, but high temperatures caused by the confined space can cause the oils in the foundation to spoil. To keep your foundation in the best condition, store in the fridge or a cool drawer.

A yoga mat

Yoga mats are usually the last thing we think about when it comes to correctly storing items, but leaving them in humid conditions such as the back of your car can cause the materials to break down. Always leave your yoga mat in a cool place, away from sunlight, to keep it looking its best.

Flour

Once we have finished baking, many of us will leave the bag of flour open in a cupboard to use at a later date. However, if kept open, a bag of flour could be exposed to bacteria which can cause it to spoil. Keep in a clean, airtight container instead, to increase its longevity.

Photographs

Cardboard boxes are frequently used for safe keeping items such as photographs, but many are actually made from acid and they can erode the images over time. Opt for acid free archival boxes to keep your photographs in their best condition.

Clothes

Clothes are a lot more delicate than we often think and many of us are guilty of stuffing our wardrobes and leaving our dry cleaned items in their bags. To help your clothes last longer, put any out of season clothes in storage and take clothes out of their dry cleaned bags and allow them to breathe.
