Cricket club celebrating 125th anniversary

Posted onPosted on 23rd Apr

2019 marks the 125th anniversary of Underwood Miners Welfare Cricket Club — a club with a proud sporting tradition.

The club is celebrating the milestone by appealing for new players, running another successful scheme for young players, and planning a family celebration day in August.

When entering the village of Underwood a sign features an image of the wickets.

However, in recent years there has been a decline in village cricket generally. Underwood remains dedicated to being a fun and friendly environment in which everyone has the opportunity to participate in or watch a game of cricket, regardless of their skill level.

Last season Underwood’s second team was disbanded because of a lack of players. However, the club has negotiated a ground share with Heanor Town Cricket Club, who will play their home matches at Underwood — meaning cricket will still be played every weekend within the village.

Underwood currently has one Saturday side, playing in the South Notts League, and one Sunday side in the Mansfield and District League. Heanor has one Saturday side playing in the Derbyshire League.

This year Underwood is again running the successful ALL STARS scheme for youngsters aged five to eight.

A club spokesman said: “You will always receive a warm welcome at Underwood, whether playing or spectating. Enjoy a cuppa, cool beer, or bring a family picnic and enjoy an afternoon watching England’s national game.

“Come along and see for yourself. We are always looking for new players and supporters.”

Plans are under way for a family celebration day on Sunday, 4th August.

Past players include Charlie Harris, who became a first-class batsman for Nottinghamshire in the 1930s and 1940s. His brother, Ken, played for Warwickshire.

In the 1960s Alan Gill, from Underwood, featured in the Nottinghamshire side, while Cyril Poole also played for the county and in three Tests for England.

Jim Astle was the brother of Jeff, who played football for Notts County, West Bromwich Albion and England.

In a 1974 charity match, current chairman Stewart Chalkley played against England Ladies, including Rachael Heyoe and Enid Bakewell.

Suzanne Redfern, who opened the bowling for Underwood 2nd X1 in the early 1990s, went on to play for England Ladies.

She competed in six Tests and 15 ODIs between 1995 and 1999. Last year Sue became the first female cricketer to have played and officiated at a Cricket World Cup. She is now an international umpire and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 92nd birthday honours.

Some of Underwood’s current players remember competing against the Root brothers when playing against Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club in a Sunday league.
