Council set to introduce two-hour free parking

Ashfield District Council is set to introduce two-hour free parking in selected car parks across the district.

A number of two-hour free bays would be added to the district’s three busiest car parks, if the plantar given the go ahead today by the council.

The council said the move would “allow residents to access and enjoy the town centres.”

Ten per cent of the spaces at Sutton Market Place; Hodgkinson Road, Kirkby; and Piggins Croft, Hucknall; would be marked out as two-hour free bays, with the remaining bays in those car parks continuing to have one-hour free parking.

The introduction of two-hour free car parking would follow the success of a free weekend parking during December.

Hundreds of residents took advantage of the free parking, increasing footfall across all Ashfield’s town centres.

The council said it would regularly review the success of the free parking bays.

There are also plans to add 11 electric vehicle-charging points to public car parks across Ashfield.

A spokesman for the council said: “The rapid-charging points charge vehicles in around 45 minutes, allowing drivers to charge their vehicles while enjoying the district’s town centres and outdoor space.

“By securing external funding we are able to provide these charging points at no extra cost to local taxpayers.”
