College celebrates inclusive sports

Posted onPosted on 23rd Jun

Portland College hosted a Jubilee Games competition in its new, wheelchair-accessible Newstart Sports Hall to mark the royal milestone — the culmination of jubilee celebrations to the Queen, a patron of the college.

Five teams from visiting specialist schools and colleges from Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire joined Portland College and Portland Day Service in football and boccia competitions. Portland Day Service won the boccia trophy, and Portland College Purple the football tournament.

Nottinghamshire Badminton Association, Badminton England, and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Super 1’s supported the event through skills challenges and have-go-activities outside on Portland’s fully accessible multi-use games area.

Mark Dale, Portland principal and chief executive, said they hoped to make it an annual event.

“The Jubilee Games was a real celebration of sport and inclusivity. It was wonderful to see so many smiling, happy faces enjoying the sport,” he added.
