Optical apprentice shines in Sutton

Posted onPosted on 6th Feb

AN OPTICIANS in Sutton is celebrating National Apprentice Week this week (3-9 February) with optical assistant apprentice, Ruth Orton.

Ruth, 17, started her apprenticeship at Specsavers in the Idlewells shopping centre in November. She had been studying child care and working weekends in Specsavers, meeting and greeting customers.

“I asked about the possibility of studying an apprenticeship at Specsavers because I really enjoyed the work and could see there are so many opportunities,” says Ruth.

“Even though I was already working at the store, my apprenticeship is completely different. I’ve really enjoyed learning the ins and outs and picking up the clinical knowledge, as well as being part of a welcoming team.

“I’ve already seen a change in myself, in my confidence and knowledge. I’m hoping to stay on at Specsavers and have a career here.’

Store director, Nigel Davidson, added: “Ruth is doing brilliantly and she has so many options open to her when she’s completed this qualification.

“We encourage everyone to follow their aspirations where possible and Specsavers has a great track record for developing people.”

Apprenticeships at Specsavers are open to people of any age and successful applicants earn a salary while learning.

The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2020 is “Look Beyond” – to help people see past the outdated stereotypes surrounding apprenticeships and to celebrate the diversity of opportunity and value that they bring to the country today. An apprenticeship can unlock long-term career options across a diverse range of roles and industries.
