Annesley Woodhouse business nominated for award

Posted onPosted on 24th Jun

Annesley Woodhouse based clothing brand, Sauce & Brown, have been nominated for a High Street Hero award at the Small Awards 2020.

Sauce & Brown Menswear creates only 100 items of each item of clothing, with each having its own individual number. Established in 2014, the business continues to grow year on year, even in these challenging times.

The Small Awards, organised by Small Business Britain, is a nationwide search for the smallest and greatest firms in the UK, across all sectors. Launched in 2017, it celebrates smaller businesses that are often overlooked for recognition at other national awards – and winners will be announced at the beginning of July.

To qualify for the High Street Hero award the business must be a “strong high street business that has a proven record of contributing towards the success of their street”.

Sauce & Brown is based on Forest Road, which features many independent businesses and has been described as the jewel of Annesley Woodhouse.

Andrew Frogson, one of the owners of Sauce & Brown, commented: “We are very proud to be recognised in this category. For a business based in an ex-mining village to be up for this award gives us the strength to keep promoting our local area and community in these challenging times.”

Having closed their doors to customers in March, they have welcomed back customers since reopening on Monday, 15th June.

Sauce & Brown continued to trade online, and have been receiving plenty of orders, but as Andrew explains, they much prefer being able to provide the personal touch with customers visiting the shop.

Andrew Frogson explained: “Offering an experience to customers is the key to the survival of the High Street and our local shops. It is about local people seeing what local businesses can offer, alongside the personal service, which is missing online.”

This is not the first time that they have been recognised by a national campaign; in 2018 Sauce & Brown were recognised by Small Business Saturday as one of the top 100 small businesses in the UK. Sauce & Brown Menswear continue to grow from strength to strength, and as Andrew said “independent retail is growing and will hopefully continue”.

Cllr David Martin, Cabinet Member for Streets, Parks and Town Centres at Ashfield District Council, said: “Sauce & Brown are a real asset to our high street, so it is fantastic that they have been nominated for such a prestigious award.

“Now that Ashfield is open for business, it is more important than ever that we support our local shops. Many of our residents have been seeing the benefits of shopping local since lockdown began, and we hope that you will continue to back our high streets.

“We have a wide variety of independent businesses that we should be proud of, and the Council is committed to ensuring that our high streets and town centres are vibrant shopping destinations.”
