Barbers’ quartet give hairdressing students top tips

Posted onPosted on 4th Dec

Modern men’s hairstyles were being cut and styled by a quartet of barbers and West Nottinghamshire College barbering students.

Joe, Callum, Greg and KJ from Ghost Barber Shop in Langley Mill, Nottingham gave a master class to the Level 2 Barbering Diploma students, focussing on modern styles which they create every day at the Dean Street salon.

The evening class barbering students were shown how to create the styles which the gents offer in the salon, including skin fades, pattern work and classical styles with a modern twist.

Student Dwayne Wiley, 27, said: “It was a really good two days’ training. They showed different techniques to start off a skin fade – demonstrating that you can fade downwards or upwards. We’ve seen so many different methods of cutting and it does vary from stylist to stylist. It’s very useful to learn from everyone’s techniques.”

Barbering tutor at the college Luke Shorthose achieved his barbering qualifications at the college in 2015-2016 and has since opened his own barber’s shop Frankie and Arnie’s – named after his son and daughter – which is located in Shirebrook.

Luke said: “The Ghost barbers delivered some great training. It’s given our students a realistic idea of how different techniques can deliver different results. The guys also gave advice on how to build an impressive portfolio and how to take images of their cuts in different lights.

“They gave a good insight into what it’s like to work in a shop and how to promote yourself professionally. We look forward to welcoming them again for next year’s course.”

Luke’s Level 2 Barbering course will commence again on 23 January and caters for men and women of mixed ages and abilities. To find out more call 0808 100 3626 or visit www.wnc.ac.uk
