Award for making a difference

Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust staff who lead on caring for patients with learning disabilities are celebrating after winning the Making a Difference Award at the National Learning Disabilities Awards.

The awards celebrate excellent support toward people with learning disabilities.

The Sherwood Forest team, led by Paula Evans and Ruth Harrison, were nominated after working collaboratively for more than a year to train individuals with a learning disability and/or autism around being able to look after themselves.

They created information that is accessible on infections, video clips on sepsis awareness, and led training for professionals to support early recognition of patient deterioration.

They continue to support awareness and collaboration, including arranging health and social care days to help people with learning disabilities or autism to access services.

Paula, Sepsis Lead Nurse for Sherwood Forest Hospitals, said: “Naturally we were really pleased to pick up this award, but our aim is not to stop here. We want to continue working together with our partners to help improve the experience of healthcare for our patients, and ultimately to improve their health outcomes.”
