Autumn happenings at The Workhouse, Southwell

Posted onPosted on 17th Oct

The Workhouse, Southwell celebrated an inspirational Poetry Festival. The theme centred around care and creativity with the poetry reflecting the flavour of the garden and natural world.

They welcomed acclaimed poet Henry Normal performing his own works (in collaboration with Flower Pod from Reach Learning Disability UK collective.)

Gareth Whitley, visitor experience and volunteering manager, said: “It was lovely to see so many people had decided to visit The Workhouse to experience poetry and to engage their senses over the two weeks. Henry Normal was the icing on the cake!

“He brought something extra special to the final weekend. It was wonderful to hear his poetry aloud. The combination of the austere surroundings and his colourful words made a great impact.”

Visitors were able to explore the house and garden on a poetry trail, hear poetry as spoken word on special performance days, take part in special workshops, and experience a scented dried herbs installation which connected smell with the poetry on display.

Gareth continued: “Next year we are hoping to develop the sensory aspect further and work with more partners in poetry from the local area.”

The National Trust property is open until 3rd November.

Apple Day is celebrated at The Workhouse, on Saturday, 19th October, from 12noon-4pm, as part of the local Bramley Festival, and includes apple themed tours and a competition to make the longest apple peel.

Admission to the event is included in the normal house price. In the build-up to Halloween, children can also follow the Curious Pumpkin trail from 12noon-4pm (£3 per child).

From a wander in the garden resplendent with giant squashes and pumpkins or joining in with one of the autumnal events, there is something for visitors of all ages at The Workhouse this autumn.
