Mansfield Museum is going animal crackers this summer.

From Saturday 22 July to Saturday 16 September, Animal Allsorts will home in on the world of animals – from wildlife to be found in the great outdoors to creatures right on our doorstep.

The exhibition will consider the British people’s love of pets, the countless ways animals co-operate and work with us, and the huge part they play in everyday culture, from literature and advertising to playthings and pubs.

The gallery will have plenty for young visitors, including toy farms and animal dress-ups, and the exhibition will include a programme of art and craft activities, changing daily throughout the summer holidays. Many are free and some will cost £1.50.

Among the highlights of the summer exhibition will be:

Monday 31 July: Meet Hunter the Sinraptor Dinosaur, who is on tour to promote the ‘Dinosaurs of China’ exhibition at Wollaton Hall, in Nottingham. Hunter will be appearing for 20 minutes at: 11am, 12noon and 1pm. Free event.

Tuesday 1 August: Pets at Home Rabbit Workshop, 10.30am-11.30am. Free event.

Wednesday 2 August: A chance to meet Holly the Shetland pony, 11am-12noon. Free event.

Thursday 3 August and Thursday 17 August: ‘Dog Safety for Kids’ with Mansfield District Council Environment and Public Protection Team, 10am-2pm. Free event.

Wednesday 16 August: White Post Farm Animal Roadshow, 10am-3.30pm. Free event.

Friday 18 August: Meet a Guide Dog Day with staff, volunteers and dogs from Guide Dogs for the Blind, 10am-2pm. Free event with a small charge for some activities and games.

Cllr Dave Saunders, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Growth, said: “It has been said, that we have more to learn from animals than animals have to learn from us and so I am sure this exhibition will be another success for our award-winning museum.

“It is sure to be a rewarding experience with something for everyone, so why not go along with the kids or grandchildren and explore an aspect of life that touches us all.”
