Activities for all the family this February half-term

Posted onPosted on 9th Feb

Mansfield District Council has put together a guide to provide families with information about free and low-cost activities taking place in the district this February to help families lead more active lifestyles.

Mansfield District Council, Mansfield Museum, Mansfield District Leisure Trust, Mansfield Palace Theatre and the Four Seasons Shopping Centre are putting on a wide range of events and activities to keep the whole family entertained this half-term holiday.

The guide includes information about sports, crafts and creative activities taking place between 13 and 23 February and focuses on the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Families are encouraged to join in with various sports activities and collect stamps on certain days as part of the Commonwealth Games Sporting Challenge.

Activities include table tennis, boccia, badminton, gymnastics, sports hall athletics and indoor cycling and will be held at leisure centres across the district from Monday 19 to Friday, 23 February and from Tuesday 3 to Friday, 6 April. There will also be some boccia and table tennis sessions held at Mansfield Museum during this time.

The council, in partnership with Mansfield District Leisure Trust, encourages families and children to participate in many of these sporting challenges together as a way of highlighting the importance of getting active to enable better health and wellbeing.

Each participant will be given a card that will get stamped each time they take part in an activity. Once five activities have been completed, they can enter it into a free prize draw to win a prize. The prizes are a month’s swim pass for a child aged under 12 and a month’s gym pass for a young person or adult aged over 12.

Full details about the challenge can be found on the council’s website at www.mansfield.gov.uk/commonwealthchallenge

In addition to this, The Wizard of Oz comes to Mansfield Palace Theatre on Sunday, 18 February as well as Milkshake! Live- The Magic Story Book on Tuesday 20 February.

There’s a Build it! Lego challenge taking place at Mansfield Museum on Tuesday, 20 February and a make-your-own-tool-box craft activity there on Thursday, 22 February too.

If shopping is on your agenda ahead of Valentine’s Day there are plenty of gifts available to buy for loved ones from Mansfield Market including fresh cut flowers, cards and jewellery. The market is open every Tuesday to Saturday and is a great place to pick up something unique.

Cllr Andrew Tristram, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Wellbeing, said: “Mansfield is a great place to live with such an extensive offering of family friendly activities available to residents and visitors.

“Health and Wellbeing is very important to us so we really encourage families to get involved and maybe try something new- head outdoors and why not even invite friends or neighbours?

“The council brings these activities together in a handy What’s On guide to make it easier for families to choose what activities are right for them, so be sure to download it and start benefiting from a whole range of free and low-cost activities and start to improve your health and wellbeing today.”
