Volunteers wanted at MS Society group

The MS Society groups in Mansfield, as well as those in Nottingham and Worksop, are looking for volunteers who could offer vital support to local people living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

The three groups are seeking new volunteer group coordinators to lead each group. Group coordinators play a vital role in delivering and developing activities and events that support local people with and affected by MS.

The local groups already provide a range of support including coffee mornings and evening socials, trips out, fundraising and information events and exercise opportunities such as accessible yoga and tai chi.

Judy Bullimore, MS Society Local Networks Officer, said: “If anyone is looking for an opportunity that truly makes a difference then this could be a role for you.

“There are more than 1,100 people living with MS around Nottingham, Worksop and Mansfield. This is a great opportunity to work with well-established groups to reach and support more people affected by this challenging and unpredictable condition. By getting involved you’ll be joining committed and friendly fellow volunteers who are really keen to do even more with your help.”

Elaine Parker Burns, who volunteers with the Mansfield Group, said: “As a result of volunteering I have met and made new friends with many and varied skills. It’s very rewarding all pulling together and working hard to help make lives better for our members.”

The kinds of skills a group coordinator needs include the ability to lead a team of volunteers, to be able to communicate to a range of audiences, to be willing to ask and understand what people affected by MS need and particularly enthusiasm about creating change and delivering and developing activities to support people.

MS affects more than 100,000 people in the UK. It’s unpredictable and different for everyone; it causes problems with how you walk, move, see, think and feel.

The MS Society is a community of people living with MS, scientists, campaigners, volunteers and fundraisers. We understand what life’s like with MS, and we support each other through the highs, lows and everything in between. And we’re driving research into more – and better – treatments. For everyone. Together, we are strong enough to stop MS.
