Students say “Hello Yellow” for mental health awareness

Posted onPosted on 12th Oct

Students at West Nottinghamshire College brought the sunshine indoors to raise awareness and funds for the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health.

The national Hello Yellow campaign was devised by Young Minds to support children and young people’s mental health on World Mental Health Day, and Level 1 Hairdressing students at the college embraced the campaign with their very own sparkle.

The students, who train in the salons at the college’s Derby Road campus in Mansfield, wanted to work together with the college’s student experience team to find a way to raise money for Young Minds, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Together with Jane Paling, the college’s volunteering, charity and events officer, the group organised a sparkling fundraising day, offering staff and students decorative hairstyles for a small donation.

Guests to their yellow-themed stand could have glitter art on their face, plaited glitter hair designs with ribbons and braiding in yellow or a relaxing head massage, for just 50p per treatment.

Jane Paling, volunteering, charity and events officer, said: “This group has worked creatively and passionately to put today’s event together and we’re going to continue to think of innovative ways to raise more money for Young Minds over the coming months. We raised over £110 on the day with more money coming in daily.

“We’re committed to helping young people at college to address mental health issues and help people to be aware of the services and people who can listen and assist them.”

Student Joy Darlow who provided more yellow entertainment dressed as a dancing banana, said: “Today has been a fun way to raise money for Young Minds. We’re really interested in helping this charity and what better way than to make people feel pampered and happy while doing this.”
