Star athletes join Lammas Leisure Centre celebration

Posted onPosted on 12th Oct

Top athletes will be helping a Sutton leisure centre celebrate its 10-year anniversary.

Everyone Active and Ashfield District Council are hosting a birthday party at Lammas Leisure Centre on Saturday, 3rd November — and the community is invited to join some of the country’s top sporting talent for free activities.

Olympic medallist Colin Jackson will be joined by local Paralympic champion Ollie Hynd, who is one of the few athletes in para-swimming to hold a Paralympic, world, European and commonwealth title at the same time, as well as former British national figure skating champion David Richardson.

The athletes will lead visitors through family-friendly fun from 10am to 8.30pm. Activities will include swim sessions, group exercise classes, and an ice skating party, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the athletes during an autograph signing at the start of the day, before David starts a figure skating showcase on the ice.

Local skate stars Rebecca Gillespie, Meg McFarlane and Paige Elliott will also deliver performances.

Ollie will be getting in the water at 1pm when the family fun session begins, setting challenges for local children to try to beat.

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train alongside an Olympic athlete will also be offered when Colin Jackson leads a Fight Klub session, from noon to 1pm.

The session is pre-bookable, go to everyoneactive.com/lammas10

English National Ice Hockey League side Sutton Sting will give a showcase from 2pm.

Colin, a former British sprint and hurdling star, said: “The centre has had a big impact on the community over the last 10 years and it’s important we recognise that. I’m looking forward to teaming up with Ollie and David for a showcase of what good about Lammas Leisure Centre.”

Ashfield District Council leader, Jason Zadrozny, will be returning to Lammas to celebrate the milestone anniversary, having cut the ribbon to open the centre 10 years ago.

He said: “It was a proud moment to officially open Lammas Leisure Centre ten years ago and I will be just as proud to be there to celebrate a decade of fantastic leisure provision in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Having such a first-class facility such as Lammas in Ashfield can only be beneficial to all residents in maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.”

Richard Chatwin, contract manager for Everyone Active, said: “Since it opened in 2008, Lammas Leisure Centre has been a hub of activity in the community and has provided opportunities for everyone, irrespective of age or ability, to get active.

“We are proud to have supported the development of many athletes who have represented their country but, perhaps more importantly, we are delighted to have provided a venue for everyone in the community to enjoy. It’s brilliant to have such high-profile athletes joining us to celebrate, and I’d encourage everyone to come down and enjoy the day.”
