Skating to success at international event

A young ice-skater delivered a personal best performance to claim a podium finish at the Lee Valley Skate Southern Club International tournament.

Paige Elliott, 10, who skates at Lammas Leisure Centre, Sutton, was third and also gained the second-highest technical score of the competition in London — missing out on the highest score by 0.01 points.

She gave a fine performance to the Greatest Showman’s hit track Million Dreams.

Paige prepared for the event by training four times per week with her coach, Jamie Geere, at the leisure centre, which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Ashfield District Council.

She has been training at the site for the past two years.

The young skater also competed in the national Young Stars Sheffield 2018 competition, where she claimed the special recognition and talent identified awards from the National Ice Skating Association (NISA).

She has now become part of NISA’s Young Stars national development programme.

Paige’s mother, Keliegh Spafford, said: “We are incredibly proud of Paige and her recent success.

“She thoroughly enjoys figure skating and she is very passionate about the sport.

“We are so proud of how hard she works on and off the ice, and her determination to meet her own goals.”

Jamie said: “Paige is an absolute pleasure to coach. She works incredibly hard on and off the ice with her training.

“Paige continues to progress and it shows in her recent success.

“I’m incredibly proud of her. She is an inspiration to all young athletes.”
