Gold and a world record for Ollie Hynd

Paralympic star Ollie Hynd banished the memories of 400m freestyle disappointment at the 2012 Games in London to claim gold in Rio.

Hynd, 21, of Kirkby, smashed his own world record by almost two seconds to finish in 4:21.89 and take gold at the Paralympics in Brazil.

Afterwards he said the disappointment of finishing second in 2012 had driven him on.

“I don’t think there has been a day where I have not thought about London and how disappointed I was not to get the gold, so it makes it all worth it now,” he said.

“I’m so happy with the time. I wanted to go under 4:20 if I’m honest, but a world record, I’m happy with that. I’ve worked so hard.”

Hynd’s best event, the SM8 200m individual medley, in which he is Commonwealth, world and European champion – as well as the Paralympics gold medal holder – is next week.
