England legends return to Welbeck

Top class T20 cricket is heading for Sookholme’s John Fretwell Complex for the second time inside a month when it hosts the Greene King England Legends Day next Friday (August 12).

Former Test match favourites Steve Harmison, Dominic Cork, Devon Malcolm, Usman Afzaal, Alex Tudor, Owais Shah, Phil DeFreitas and Richard Blakey are among those names already confirmed.

They will be joined by other ex-professionals in a PCA Masters XI who will take on a side made up of players from the two supporting clubs – hosts Welbeck CC and Farnsfield CC.

The event follows the hugely successful staging of the Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire Royal London Cup match at the same venue in July when more than 4,500 spectators flocked to see Mick Newell’s home side record a 65-run win.

It has been made possible by sponsorship from Greene King, with any money raised to be ploughed back into the two participating clubs, who are both strong advocates of promoting youth cricket.

The Masters last played at Welbeck in 2014 when a healthy crowd saw some sparkling cricket from some of England’s best-known faces from the recent past.

This year’s match will be preceded by a junior kwik cricket tournament (noon until 4pm) and a corporate hospitality meal (from noon) – where the PCA Masters players will host a number of tables – before an evening disco (7pm onwards) will finish off the occasion.

The match itself will take place between 4pm and 7pm, with Welbeck president John Fretwell eagerly-awaiting the occasion.

“The Legends matches we have held before have been fantastic, played in a fun, family atmosphere – and we’ve no doubt it will be another terrific spectacle,” he said.

“It was great to host another Nottinghamshire match here last month and get such a great crowd in. Hopefully those people enjoyed their day with us, and we’d like to welcome them back for what we expect to be another memorable occasion that will benefit local cricket.”

A limited amount of corporate hospitality tickets are available from £35, with general admission £7 for adults, £5 for seven to 17-year-olds, while under-sevens go free. Parking is £2 per car.

Advanced tickets are available on 01623 847468, but you can also pay on the day. Go to www.welbeckcricket.uk for more details.
