Another Stags signing at end of busy week

Mansfield Town completed a busy week on Friday afternoon with the signing of a midfielder who once played in the Champions League.

Jacob Mellis, (26), joined Chelsea from Sheffield United for £1m in 2007. He was a member of the Blues’ youth team that reached the FA Youth Cup final under Paul Clement in 2008 and the former England U16s’ captain made his Chelsea debut in a Champions League win against MSK Zilina in November 2010.

After a brief loan spell at Southampton, Mellis signed for Barnsley, where he was a consistent performer in the Championship, making over 70 appearances in a two-year spell.

He later played for Blackpool, Oldham Athletic and Bury.

On Thursday the Stags signed striker Lee Angol and full back Hayden White from Peterborough. White was on loan at Mansfield towards the end of last season.

Earlier in the week midfielder Paul Digby, winger Paul Anderson and frontman Jimmy Spencer signed for the Stags.

Last week defender Zander Diamond and keeper Conrad Logan were signed.
