Shop local campaign to boost Mansfield traders

People in Mansfield are being urged to ‘Shop Local’ as part of the annual Love Your Local Market campaign later this month.

The campaign, which this year has the theme Markets: Close to Your Heart, runs from 17 to 31 May.

It is a chance for people celebrate all that the town offers in terms of ‘retail therapy’ and is part of a wider council strategy to encourage a sense of pride in the district and to promote it as a good place to live, work, visit and invest in.

In addition to the regular market, which runs daily from Tuesday to Saturday with a total of 60-plus stalls, selling homeware, fruit and vegetables, clothing, watches and much more, there will also be a farmers’ market on Tuesday 15 May, as part of the local campaign, and local business promotions on 23 May.

During the half-term from 29 May to 2 June, young shoppers will be able to enter a Love Local quiz trail with a chance of winning up to £20 in gift vouchers to spend on Mansfield Market. There will also be free craft activities for children on 26 May from 10am to 2pm.

Quiz entries can be handed in at Mansfield Museum, Mansfield Library, the Old Town Hall or at the Four Seasons shopping centre help desk during the Love Your Local Market fortnight. The winners will be drawn at random after the promotion on 8 June.

There will be freebies for shoppers as well as discounts for trader stalls available throughout the fortnight.

Mayor of Mansfield Kate Allsop said: “Mansfield has a lot to be proud of and is a really great place to indulge in a bit of retail therapy.

“As well as many of the big name chain stores, it has a whole range of independent traders – not least, of course, on the market. These independent traders are so valuable because they are what give Mansfield its own unique identity and help to set it apart from other towns, so it is important that we, as the people who live and work here, support those smaller businesses and the local economy to help them to thrive and grow.

“So come along to the town centre and join in this celebration of ‘shopping local’ over these two weeks and rediscover just how much Mansfield has to offer.”

Love Your Local Market is now in its seventh year and is promoted in the UK by the National Association of British Market Authorities. This year there will be more than 3,000 events taking place in 17 countries around the world.
