Planting for the future

Pupils from Berry Hill Primary School, Mansfield, visited King George V Park in the town to take the lead in planting a community orchard.

Two classes of children worked in teams to plant their own fruit trees.

Funding for half the trees was secured from the Greenwood Partnership Trust and the remainder was supplied by Mansfield District Council.

Officers from both organisations were at the planting event to offer advice and support.

The school has taken part in many joint projects, to help with improvements at the park.

They sowed a wildflower meadow; supported East Midlands In Bloom, Clean-Up Mansfield and Green Flag initiatives; designed a tree carving; and planted other trees and spring-flowering bulbs.

Teacher Kerry Senior said: “We are always keen to take up opportunities to visit the park. We encourage children to see the importance of their actions in the local area and how they can play a positive role.”
