Help make a difference to a child’s reading

Posted onPosted on 19th Jun

Training sessions are to be held for people interested in becoming literacy volunteers in primary schools.

The charity Literacy Volunteers, formed in 1996, needs more volunteers to work with pupils on a one-to-one basis on Nottinghamshire schools and Early Years settings.

The charity encourages children to develop an interest and love for books.

It urged people to “help break down barriers and open doors to lifelong achievement.”

Volunteers do not teach reading, but talk, read and play word games with children to help build their vocabulary and confidence through words and spelling.

Volunteers do not need formal qualifications, and training and ongoing support is provided.

A spokesman said: “If you can give just half a day a week’s regular commitment for at least one school year, and would like to become part of a committed volunteering force that is doing great work improving literacy and transforming the lives of children, please get in touch.”

For information call 0115 8765474 or email contact@literacy volunteers.org.uk or go to www.literacyvolunteers.org.uk

The next training courses are planned for Mansfield at the end of June and in September.
