Guinness world record holder joins Mansfield 10K

Posted onPosted on 11th Sep

Joining the hundreds of runners at Sunday’s Mansfield 10K is Anthony Allsop, a Guinness World Record holder who at the age of 77 is also the oldest person taking part.

Anthony holds the record for the oldest man to walk from Lands End to John O’Groats. The challenge, which he completed for the second time in 2015, took him 50 days.

To practice for the 10K, Mansfield-born Anthony has been power walking around the town.

He says: “I usually do longer walks, but have been practicing power walking for this event. I don’t use walking sticks, but always take an umbrella with me whenever I go for a walk.”

Having previously completed the Mansfield 10K in 1 hour 35 minutes, Anthony is hoping to complete this year’s event in just 90 minutes. His wife Beryl will be cheering him on, along with the huge crowds set to come into Mansfield town centre to watch the event.

Anthony has been inspired to take part in the 10K by his daughter, Maria, who works at Reach Learning Disability’s base in Mansfield.

Reach supports people with learning disabilities to reach beyond their expectations and make a good life for themselves in their local communities. The Mansfield 10K raises much-needed funds to help Reach continue their work.

Reach fundraising officer Sarah Cobb, says: “We are already up on numbers from last year and hope to reach 1000 entries by this weekend.”
