Children’s hospital challenge for super-fundraiser

Posted onPosted on 12th Jul

Idlewells Shopping Centre’s well-known super-fundraiser, Alan Hupton, has announced he will be collecting for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London, permanently, following his involvement in the Sutton centre’s One Great Day annual event in aid of the hospital.

Alan, who has been fundraising in Idlewells for 17 years, has supported charities for around 30 years, raised significant amounts for Guide Dogs for the Blind, Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation.

Alan recently reached a total collection in excess of £50,000 for Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance — in just five years of collecting for the cause.

Ready to take on the challenge for a new charity, Alan opted to collect for Great Ormond Street via the Idlewells’ annual event — One Great Day.

Said Chloe O’Donnell, Idlewells’ manager: “Alan had helped us fundraise for a week last year, and then expressed an interest in collecting for the children’s hospital on a more permanent basis.

“We are thrilled to have him on board with our own efforts.

“Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital is an amazing charity, helping children and families from all over the UK.”

Chloe thanked the generosity of Sutton shoppers, who continue to donate regularly through difficult economical times.

“We are always amazed at how much local people are prepared to give to worthy causes. Alan is a well-known face here and he has many, many regular donors who give generously each time they pass by,” she said.

Alan said: “I am grateful for all that the shopping centre has done for me over the years. By helping their fundraising, it’s a way to say thank you.

“I’m happy to be helping this worthwhile charity and children.”

Idlewells’ Great Day event raised more than £1,200 for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
