Academy cadets go on camp

Posted onPosted on 19th Jul

Cadets from Sutton Community Academy took part in a summer camp in Shrewsbury.

The school launched a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) in September last year to provide another way for students to gain practical skills outside of their academic studies.

Since its launch, the CCF has gone from strength to strength with 29 youngsters now involved.

Cadets, aged from 14 to 16, and their adult volunteers travelled to Nesscliffe Training Camp for activities such as archery, water sports, laser tag, tower climbing, a shooting course, a 24-hour field experience and a talk from a World War One historian.

Second Lieutenant Marion Wells, an adult volunteer with the academy’s CCF, said: “It was really good fun.

“There was lots of excitement among the cadets for weeks before so it was great to finally travel to our destination.

“The cadets joined other young people and adult volunteers from Dukeries Academy, Ollerton, at the camp.”

Tim Croft, Sutton Community Academy principal, who visited the cadets during the camp, added: “It was great to see all of the skills and attributes that have been learnt and developed come to fruition at camp.

“I am looking forward to having a larger Cadet Force in school from September as I can only see the benefits that it brings to the students, the school and the wider community.”
