100-year celebration in Ashfield

Posted onPosted on 23rd Feb

Ashfield District Council launched a year of events to mark the end of the first world war by unveiling a floor-lighting display on Kirkby Plaza, in tribute to Armed Forces members past and present.

The council is working closely with local Armed Forces groups, community organisations, schools and businesses to co-ordinate the programme of events and activities based around the centenary commemmorations.

They will come to the forefront from 29th June to Remembrance Day, 11th November.

Council leader Coun Cheryl Butler said: “Alongside the activities that are planned in Ashfield, we will also be re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant, dedicating one of our parks as a centenary field and contributing to a lasting first world war Role Of Honour Centenary Memorial, which is expected to be situated alongside the River Trent in Nottingham.

“This will name each and every Service personnel who gave their lives so that we could live ours in freedom.”

The council would like to hear from anyone who is organising an event or activity in Ashfield or who would like to get involved.
